Girl by the Window

This is just a photo referenced speedpaint that I did before going to bed. For practice and pleasant dreams.

Retro Character Sketches

Nothing too special this time around, really. I just drew a few character sketches for no particular reason, going for a more or less retro feel in the designs. The dude on top right was supposed to be some kind of military officer, but when I was done I realized I’d drawn a bullfighter instead. Hahhah.

Sultry Women Revisited

Oh man, I had a hard time with these! The first one was easy, but after that it was all just a downward spiral. Hours of my life, filled with nothing but sheer despair! It’s such a tough life being an artist!

…Good thing I’m not writing poems, though – or it’d be razorblade-time right about now.

Sultry Women

Time for a bit more of photo-referenced sketches – I drew some attractive women from the days past. I just might do a few more.

Pirate Sketches

I’ve been dying to try out Manga Studio because of all the good things I keep hearing about it. It was a bitch to set up, but I finally, finally succeeded after some completely stupid tweaking with the user accounts on my Windows XP. Three hoorays for both Microsoft and e frontier!Because I don’t know which to blame, I’ll blame ‘em both.

I have to say that Manga Studio is pretty sweet, though. The drawing and inking capabilities are really impressive – very smooth, pleasurable and fast as hell. Working in 1200dpi is no problem at all, while Photoshop would completely choke on the same image. It was an easy transition from PS too, even though I’ve just managed to try it out with some quick pirate sketches, done straight in "ink".

Travelling and Goon Sketches

Some more sketches are to follow. The first batch is from my trip to my folks’ summer cottage, to celebrate the midsummer. I had a nice trip just sitting around doing nothing, except for some random sketching.

The first one was drawn on train with no other purpose except to fill the time. Lots of fun and a bumpy ride.

The next two are from the cottage. The first was drawn with a brushpen, which I haven’t really used before and which might work better with smoother paper. The second on has a bad composition, that I’m trying to hide with some Photoshop shading, hahhah.

And last, attempts on caricatures of Something Awful goons for an Eatpoo weekly. The problem is that I ‘m not very good at doing caricatures and – with the way those goons look – I think I just ended up normalizing them instead. Witness some poor attempts with graphite, gouache and watercolor. Now I remember why I stopped sketching with a pencil – it always smears and makes a mess.

Sketch Extravaganza 18.6.07

Here’s just some random stuff from my sketchbook. They’re all drawn with a rollerball pen – usually late at night, just before going to bed. If there’s a word to describe these, "sketchy" would probably be it.

On the second page, I have some rejected, first idea sketches for Stylus Art Forum’s calendar activity.

And the rest are referenced from photographs from various sources – including mugshots, portrait photography and titty pictures. The devil of the first one I hallucinated during a four week cocaine binge with Johnny Depp – and the geeky looking smoker on the second was an Australian(?) tourist, who I drew from memory and did no justice at all. He had a white guy’s afro and his sweatpants were tugged into his socks.

Batman sketches

It’s been fucking long since the last time I’ve posted. I guess my motivation ran off with another man. Good times, bad times.

Anyway, to stop the the tail-spin I managed to whip out some sketches of my favorite superhero (whose comic I practically don’t read). So here’s a pinup of Batman and Catwoman standing in snowfall for some unknown reason. Maybe Batman forgot his keys to the Batmobile and Catwoman is just about to gleefully dump him and take off with her Cat-van.

And here’s just another crappy sketch of Bats. I also did a Joker but he turned out too bad even for this blog.

UPDATE: Revised the Catwoman a little – her arms looked awful and what was I thinking with the whip.

More and Less Super Superheroes

On Illustration Friday the theme for the week is Superheroes. Yay, what a way to get creative juices flowing! Instead of going for those age old, steroid popping Pro Wrestlers of the comic book world, I felt like creating more down-to-earth characters – Stuck ankle deep in it for some of them.

So without further a due, here’s a really motley crew of heroes of the night:
The loners, the Door Patrol, the Brotherhood of Jack, the Dynamic Duo of Prowler and Distractor and finally the lovely ladies for whom I failed to come up with a catchy group name. Watch out for foul language.

And here’s a small comic about Bitterman. Kind of like "Bitterman Reborn (again)".

Hellmommy

Hellmommy
Showing a never failing talent of making myself look bad I present to you: Hellmommy! Right behind you Martti!

Over at Eatpoo forums someone started a thread "What if Hellboy had a Sister…" and invited people to draw their versions of Hellboy’s (by Mike Mignola, of course) sister. Well, I figured if Hellboy had a sister, they’d also need a mom. Hence these masterpieces of comic book fan art.

Can you find all the mistakes in these sketches? I keep finding new ones every time I look at them. You know, all the best art just keeps on giving!

Superhero Sketches

Even though superheroes have never really been my thing, I like to draw an occasional Batman or Catwoman every now and then. This time I also did a few others.

I might have been too tired by the time I got to Catwoman. I might have screwed her up.

Then again, there are probably worse things than screwing Catwoman.

Flasher Minotaur & Others

Another bunch of sketches and general nonsense.

From left to right: Bad cropping due to bad planning (i.e. the lack of it),
the guy I would love to see take on the Black Knight (stay tuned for a sequel)
and the said general nonsense (and a mandatory zombie).
